Canine Shelter

A kennel is the term used for any structure or shelter designed for dogs. A pet crate can also be called a kennel since it is also a structure or shelter designed to contain a dog or group of dogs. There are different types of dog kennels to suit the particular need of the dog and dog owners. Small dog owners may actually choose to purchase a puppy crate to house or transport their dogs, while owners of large dogs may buy or even build a dog kennel for their pets.

A dog crate or kennel that is designed for indoor use is typically smaller than one that is designed for outdoor use. Indoor crates provide pet owners with a safe, secure place for their pets when needed. A lot of pet owners maintain an indoor crate with soft blankets for their dogs to sleep on at night. Outdoor crates for dogs are typically large and can vary widely in terms of their design as well as structure.

Lock Them up to Keep Things on Lockdown

It’s important to keep your pets in dog crates when you leave the house. Oh, have I heard a number of horror stories from my friends with dogs. One lady left her house for only 30 minutes and didn’t cage her two Bulldogs, Casey and Steve, and they chewed through a leg on her coffee table. When she came home the table was in ruins and the dogs had a mouth full of splinters.

My other friend Latoya left her three rat terriers, Shelly, Lilly and Lacy, at home for 2 hours while she visited a friend at the hospital and upon her return, she found every pillow in the entire house ripped to shreds. There was stuffing everywhere! I’m telling you; crate your dogs before leaving your house if you want to return to it in the same condition.

Choosing the Right Dog Kennel for your Pet

There are lots of ways by which you can provide shelter for your pet. It is all about providing a personal space, a place where they will be comfortable and happy. Dog kennels are the most common way. You will find them in dog specialty stores or in the pet section of big department stores. But how to you choose which will work best for your pet?

There are two main factors to consider when choosing the right dog kennel for your pet. The first is the size of your yard. The second is the size of your dog. You might want a huge kennel for your dog to provide him with more space but if your backyard is small, you will have to settle for a smaller space for your pet. Definitely, a smaller space should mean that it is big enough to provide a comfortable space for your pet. He should be able to stand upright in it, stretch out while sleeping if that’s what he wants and have enough room so he will not have to sleep very close to his waste bin.

Avoid Ammonia Based Cleaners

July 23rd, 2010

It is natural for dogs to soil their living areas. This can be avoided by letting them out at specified times and not letting them in until they have urinated. If your dog soils the crate, it is not reason to scold or punish him. Maybe, he was not trained enough. Just get him out of the crate and clean out the mess.

You will need something that will eliminate the odor of the waste. Definitely, it will not be an ammonia-based cleaner because ammonia has the smell that will remind the dog of urine. It might only make him associate his crate to a place where he can urinate. Rather, you can use a dilute bleach solution, or a half-and-half mixture of warm water and white vinegar. This will work for all kinds of crates, small or large dog crates and crates made of plastic or metal.
