pet ramp

July 23rd, 2009

We live in a four bedroom, two-storey house. We have a dog that has been with us since she was four months old. Now that Red (our pet German Shepherd) is pass her prime (she’s ten years old now), she has problems going up and down the stairs. She usually stays in the porch but even there she’s having a hard time going up and down the short porch steps. This is why we got her a pet ramp.

A pet ramp is designed for elderly dogs or dogs with certain injury. It will make life easier for them. Prior to getting a ramp, Red preferred to stay in the yard. When it was nighttime, she would just curl up by the foot of the porch. Now with the pet ramp, she can go up with ease and sleep by my foot while I watch TV.

An overweight or simply lazy dog is very hard to get inside the car. You’ll find that there a lot of lifting and struggling involved. This not only has the risk of hurting your pet, it can also do you damage too! Accept that not every dog can nimbly jump into the car without help. But he can be easier to coax to walk up or down at a gentle incline if you have a pet ramp.

Check if the incline is suitable for your pet. Measure the length of the ramp from your car to the ground first. And since some dogs are wary of new things, you can place a few treats on the ramp the first few times he will have to try it. Give your dog lots of encouragement until he gets used to it. It may sometimes take a long time, but the results will be worth it in the end.

Parrot pellets

July 6th, 2009

There seems to be disagreement on the use of pellets as opposed to supplemented seed and fresh food as the best diet for parrots. Parrot pellets are claimed to contain all essential nutrients in a balanced formula and are totally edible. With pellets or crumbles the birds get excellent nutrition. Those who prefer to give pellets to their birds limit the use of supplements or treats. Parrot pellets vary in size from the crumble size to medium size diets for bigger birds like macaws and cockatoos.

The other camp believes that attempting to get all nutrients into a pellet is a bit of a challenge. Furthermore, getting all the nutrients to survive the manufacturing and distribution process can be difficult. The matter of shelf life of the product is also being questioned. This camp believes that seeds with supplements are the best diet for pet parrots. Besides, there are pet owners who claim that their birds are allergic to pellets.

canine obedience exercises

July 6th, 2009

Dogs are a different species from humans. They have more powerful senses of hearing and smell and get around much faster on four legs. Aside from these physical differences, dogs see things differently than we do. Like children, they need to be taught how to obey for their own safety and others’.

According to dog experts, puppies must begin canine obedience exercises the moment they join your household. Dogs must learn basic commands while they are still young. They should also learn how to behave within a friendly and stimulating community. For example, an 8-week-old puppy should learn to sit for his food or walk on a leash without pulling its owner.

crate training a puppy

July 2nd, 2009

My dad loves big dogs. For his 60th birthday, my sister and I decided to get him an American Mastiff puppy. Since I’m the one with experience with dogs, it was up to me do the training. The first thing I had to do was to housebreak the puppy. I did this in four weeks. Next on my agenda, is crate training a puppy. This took me about six weeks.

Crate training a puppy is quite easy. You just have to be consistent in your training. Firstly, you have to associate the crate with fun time. Putting it in a place where your family hangs out is a good idea. When your puppy is no longer afraid of the crate, you can then play and eat near the crate. Next you can try putting treats inside the crate. After that, you can leave your puppy a short while in the crate followed by a snack for good behavior. Once you can leave your puppy for 30 minutes at a time, crate training is almost done. In a few days, your puppy will prefer the crate making it his/ her den.

Petmate kennel

July 2nd, 2009

At one time or another you and your dog will find yourselves getting ready for a trip. It could be a camping trip or a visit to relatives in a distant location. One of the first things you will want to get your dog is a kennel or crate. It will keep him safe at the back of your car and it will keep you focused on your driving. To be sure, the Petmate kennel should be one that is comfortable for the long drive. It should be tall enough such that the dog can stand up and still have a couple of inches allowance overhead.

There are other things to take care of regarding your trip. If this will be the dog’s first long trip, introduce him to the experience by driving him to nearby places like the park. Do this often enough and he will be adjusted by the time you go on your long trip. On travel day, feed your dog with a light meal four hours before you are scheduled to start. Avoid feeding him in the vehicle, otherwise you might find yourself swearing and cleaning up in the middle of your trip.
