Final Resting Place

Choosing an urn to keep the ashes of our loved one in is a very important decision. I still remember when my mother died and I was given this monumental task. There were a lot of funeral urns for me to choose from where we will keep the majority of my mother’s remains. I finally decided on a lovely ceramic jar that was colored white with some blue accents. This was where we kept my mother’s ashes for the funeral.

I also selected six small brass urns to distribute to my siblings. All of the urns contained some of the ashes of my mother. All of us created a shrine in our homes where we placed our urns in memory of our mother. My particular shrine contains a picture of my mother when she was still vibrant and young. This is how I want to remember my mother. I never forget to say a prayer for her everyday at her shrine.

Beautiful Memories

What is an urn? An urn is a vase which usually has a narrowed neck above a footed pedestal. It is ordinarily covered and has no handles. There are different types of urns depending on its use. It is very common to see a handmade urn made out of different types of materials. It could be made out of wood, metal or even pottery. A handmade urn is considered a work of art and is one of the best ways to decorate your home.

An urn could also be used for holding the remains or the ashes of the dead after cremation. It could also be a closed vessel usually with a spigot for serving a hot beverage like coffee. It is then called a coffee urn. Most urns nowadays are handcrafted and come in different shapes and no longer have to follow a vase like pattern. It is now getting very common to cremate the dead and keep their ashes in our homes in a handmade urn to keep the memories of our departed loved ones alive in our hearts.

Lassie

The most popular dog, in my opinion, is not Tinkerbell (Hilton’s Chihuahua). Hands down, it would be Lassie, the female rough collie that lived in a small farming community. Lassie is an American television series that ran from September 1954 to March 1973. It dealt mostly with themes that explored the relationship between boys and their dogs while giving the viewers a better understanding of mid-twentieth century American boyhood.

Lassie was consistently depicted as caring, nurturing, and responsible with a commitment to family and community, often rescuing those in peril and righting wrongs. She was the perfect ‘mother’ within the American ideology of the 1950’s and 1960’s. Lassie was always portrayed as having wholesome family values that were very common values in the society during the period. I’m sure, if Lassie was shown to be placed in a wood cremation urn when the show finally ended, that urn would be visited by a staggering number of people and would probably be placed in the Guinness Book of World Records.
